about

In 1935, writer and total waster, Ernest Hemingway published a book containing the recipe for a cocktail called 'Death in the Afternoon'. It's made by mixing Absinthe and Champagne and the perfect inducer of black outs. This song is about said cocktail but it also isn't about that at all (sorry for wasting your time but knowledge is power so you're like Cthulu or something right now)

lyrics

The night that we drank absinthe and champagne
And cursed the name of Ernest Hemingway
And tried to talk with people in the way
When we were left alone there was nothing left to say

And the picture I have from that day
Still tells me that it's true
That all the world at once can be brand new
Because there's no more need to be afraid
If it's all that I can do
When you can't carry on
I'll carry you

The night we quoted Keats under bright stars
Kensington to Baker Street was ours
Untouched by the dulcet drone of cars
And the foxes that prowled the night like jaguars

And the pictures we saw the next day
All hung around the room
Could never match that moment there with you
And there's no need to be afraid
If it's all that I can do
When you can't carry on
I'll carry you

The night we painted pictures on the dock
In water colour stains and pastel chalks
The wood creaked as the party boats crashed by
As we tried to trace the ever fading light

And the picture I have from that day
Will never be that good
But it's so strange how the colours seem to bloom
Because there's no more need to be afraid
If it's all that I can do
When you can't carry on
I'll carry you

The night I cursed upon the bathroom floor
The smoke signals had you running to my door
As we waited for the call of our Great War
So removed from the Renaissance before

And there are no pictures from that day
As we cried on that strange bed
And mourned the afternoon
We three fell dead
Because I cry so hard sometimes
That it's hard for me to see
But when I can't carry on
You carry me
